  1. What is this roof design: "Shed", "Lean to"...? Also would you have set your ladder up on the garage roof to get to the upper roof? There is nothing to secure the ladder to, the roof pitch is about 5/12, it is around 10 feet from the garage roof up to the next section. Just wondering what others think they would have done in this case. Click to Enlarge 77.83?KB
  2. I followed up on this and it was a loose neutral in the main panel. They said it took 4 complete turns of the lug to tighten it up.

    Success!

    Very cool - congrats!
  4. I though this was worth sharing. Click to Enlarge 46.82 KB
  5. It is probably a heat detector used to the alarm company. They use heat detectors instead of smoke detectors so they don't get notified everytime time someone burns their dinner.
  6. Thanks All - Once I learn the details of the repair / problem I'll post it.
  7. I did an inspection back in March. House built in 1950, electrical panel has been upgraded: breakers & 200 amp service - no notable visible issues. The owners called me this weekend because they have a problem with the lights flickering. After some Q&A this is what I learned. - Flickering = lights get dim then bright over and over - Lights don't always flicker - just sometimes - It is not always the same lights that flicker - When flickering, turning the light off then back on makes no difference - they will continue to flicker - Power company came out and found nothing wrong on thier side of the service. I told them they will need an electrician as I have no idea whet it could be. But as a gesture of good will I said I would try and do some research to see what I could learn. It will also be a good learing experience. So any ideas what it could be?
  8. That's Great!
  9. I've been to Australia twice and don't remember any funny door knob issue. It is probably to keep the kids inside an away from the dingos.
  10. I had a furnace last week that was very very loud, I determined it was air being sucked into through the combustion air intake pipe ontop of the furnace - similar to the one in your picture. Somehow turblance was being created and if i placed just one finger into the pipe the sound went away.
  11. My home owners insurance is paying for a new roof due to hail damage - which I'm very happy about since the roof is almost 20 years old anyway - yea me! The contractor doing the work says he typically uses GAF brand shingles, but would install whatever brand I want. I don't know if there is any significant difference between brands these days, but figured somone here would have an opinion.
  12. Can this be moved or copied to the Product Recall section of the forum.
  13. I agree with Kurt - I would not fill out the questionnaire without talking to an attorney, and I would not send a bill to anyone.
  14. that looks like a bonding wire - where did the other end go. also that brass gass line should be replaced. View the safety alert at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/cpsr_nws06.pdf
  15. or we could just run the a/c until the house was cooled down enough to run the furnace. also that red wire will shock you just enough to make you say ouhh
  16. I do not suggest doing it with any one present - but you could have removed the stat and joined the red & white wires together this should start the furnace. I have jumped a system like this to check its operation in foreclosures when there was no stat installed. To check the cooling you connect the red/green and yellow or blue.
  17. I got it - clever.
  18. That is one hell of a chimney cap mess. On another note - I've never had any big garage door malfunctions - but before I open them I always inspect the tracks, cables, springs, etc...
  19. Oh Snap - thanks good catch.
  20. There were no signs of leaks and the house is 5 years old, but i'snt the top and sides of the flashing supposed to be under the shingles? The roof was too high and steep for me to get a close look. Click to Enlarge 44.84 KB
  21. I do not see where it is prohibited - but seems stupid. I think at best the water might be warm by the time the toilet was full and then cool down to room temp pretty quick.
  22. I'm having a problem with mine not turning off. It use to turn off by itself after a few minutes, now I can't get it to turn off at all and the battery just runs down. Even if I push the "off" button it won't shut off. Any suggestions?
  23. Interesting - Thanks Kurt.
