  1. I'm sure you already know this, but if you put your finger over the hot or neutral slot, you don't get the readings until the sniffer is in place.
  2. IF they could keep the price low enough to make it an equitable solution for a commuter rig, I'd buy one. That, and I'd need to be sure there's enough acceleration to get out of other people's way.
  3. If you run the water, does pressure lower and then slowly go back up?
  4. Something is definitely wrong if it continues to try to fire multiple times. The flame isn't proving for some reason.
  5. Are you sure it wasn't the sound of sediment "popping" when heated in the base of the tank, or condensation dripping onto the burner from a recently lit AWH?
  6. High BTU output burner. Most 40 and 50 gal. water heaters only have a burner rated at around 40k btu's, while the Rheem has a much higher rated burner, so there's a much quicker recovery rate. There's less standby loss with a water heater that has a smaller tank, and newer water heaters of course have better insulation levels (not that any gas unit is great, due to the large flue up the center). This water heater is at the top of my list for when I need to replace mine.
  7. I have contractors tell me how long they've been in business, after calling out defects, quite often. It doesn't impress me with, you know, that imperfect practice. Plus, I'd guess you just had a minimally trained guy working for the company do the install. It's not the company, it's the employee that does the installation. If you prove it was done wrong, contact/ complain to the owner of the company.
  8. I'm pretty positive you aren't using the proper building code......
  9. How many of you grew up wanting to be a home inspector? Heck, I didn't even know the profession existed, or at least had never thought of it until I found myself going to an interview....
  10. Erby, you're killing me. You wear the mask, but no coveralls? Apparently you must have some clean crawlspaces down your way....
  11. Is there rust on the new roofing nails that penetrate the sheathing? That will help determine if this is a past/ present issue. Not saying that there is an issue, only because your pictures are well, uhhhh........
  12. Marc, I don't think this is what you meant to "say"...
  13. The lesser the clearances, the more rot I typically run into, either in the lower siding or sill plate area.
  14. Are you sure soil washed away, or did it get moist and compact over time? They may have poured on top of soil that wasn't compacted or some wood may have rotted beneath the footings, allowing the soil to drop.
  15. Perhaps they were planning for future ductwork, or the concrete guys weren't sure what they were installing for a heat source?? That's my guess in regards to the gap @ the garage stem wall.
  16. Thanks for the tip.
  17. Not at all Jim, That's exactly how I do did inspections for years. I haven't done an inspection in a couple of months now......
  18. Another issue with the meter and house is that it looks like it tipped over at some point. Sure hope you noticed that:)
  19. Reason I asked.... It doesn't look like that chimney extends up 3' above the roof penetration point. Is that required where you're at?
  20. What's the fuel source for this chimney? Just curious if those are really vents, or chimneys?
  21. The worst delayed ignition occurrences I've run into are from when there's a cracked heat exchanger. Everything will seem to work just fine for a while, and then boom, like the backfire from a car. This is quite loud inside a house.
  22. I did for several years. Bought 2 as back- ups, and never needed them. Never had a switch fail, which is unusual. I'm pretty well known for being harder than average on equipment.
  23. Welcome to delayed ignition [:-bigeyes. While there are many things that may have caused this, the most typical one is a plugged crossover (where gas gets ignited and shoots over to light the main burner). I fix these delayed ignition issues on a regular basis. It's a great reminder to keep your hand on either the power switch or gas valve (one on the combination valve) when firing a furnace.
