  1. Great article and thanks for passing that along! I just heard a story on the radio recently about some testing of houses near Long Island NY for fire-suppression purposes. They burned some modern-era houses down that had modern stuff in them and modern insulation details. They are finding that modern houses (being so 'tight') are now having far-higher interior 'fire temperatures' during a fire that is causing a lot of problems for fire-fighters.. I can see this radiant stuff making it worse for the firefighters as well.
  2. Main disconnect ... that is not an abnormal thing to see in the East..
  3. Indeed.. carpenter ant treatment as BillK said.. "Move on"
  4. I like that... ! Thanks!
  5. We see it often around BOS... Huge 1890's homes usually though.... The original furnace was a huge monster type... Look, HVAC is 'funky on the edges' and you cannot always accurately predict performance during a home inspection....
  6. Little Giants are very very safe.... It's 'mil-spec' stuff.. how do you think they got their start? Home Inspection? ! ?
  7. Yep.. Simple is better.. "Valleys are roofed improperly with edges of material facing upslope, contrary to normal practices. Leakage could possibly result. Have those areas re-roofed in the proper manner to prevent leakage". Do an Albert King solo, not an Al Dimeola solo..
  8. I thought I heard a story on NPR about some such base in Norway being used for 'data storage' due to the cold.. No? Is this the place? I guess date-storage/cloud companies are buying up properties close to the Arctic circle.. ?
  9. You know that old adage about 'exercising your breakers' ? Well, I'd say 75% of all 'oil burner emergency shut-off switches' I see 'don't work anymore'. Reason: They don't get used.. they fail.. if not used (or exercised). Old panels are not great .. .there is a reason they recommend upgrades after 40 or so years..
  10. Is that the Alumi Con connector system? The photo is a bit 'afar'.. ?
  11. 5 ? World record..
  12. Limit-control? Possibly?
  13. Oopps.. more appropriately called "Serbo-Disney" architecture..
  14. Like Mike said.. use a magnet.. R
  15. Idun-o-Nite?
  16. Need more photos Mike.. First photo looks like exhaust-gas leakage (a vertical 'plume..') Did you put a mirror near those areas to see if exhaust-gas was condensing on your mirror? I.E., could be 'draft-related'...
  17. Those guys are wrong.. it's not silverfish.. ..it's Silvah-fish... Just for the reckid..
  18. Right on man.. "Operation Torch" our first real taste of 'stuff'.. My Dad was in Oran (Algeria) in a field-hospital for a short time (Medical tech) and I've got a ton of photos from N Africa here in the shack .. Casablanca, Oran, etc. He used to tell us how his camp got 'buzzed' by a P-38 'on the deck'.. for a joke.. He crossed N.Atlantic 22times ferrying wounded GI's, POWs back to US and fresh troops back to ETO.. one trip to Manila also. A lot of time on the water..
  19. I'd put the kibosh on it for 'foot injury reasons' (by a visitor..) No one expects such a 'fitting' in a shower-basin.. The manufacturers of shower stalls/basins probably have agreements about stuff like this.. which is why you never see such a thing.. I'm of the mind to say: "It's a cool idea.. I thing you should find another way to route the discharge and repair the hole.. but to be honest.. That's up to you.. "
  20. Usually, you'll find those Mass-folks are from the "North Shore" and North/NW of Boston towns.. (Somerville, Malden, Melrose, Stoneham, Lynn, Revere, Saugus, etc). The Shore Shore folks mostly migrate 'down the Cape' or more south .. to Marshfield, (AKA "MarshVegas") Scituate, Hingham, etc.. You'd think the trip across Boston Harbor was a million miles wide... some folks from either shore have never been to the other...
  21. I stayed there twice and thought it looked familiar.. (York).. (PS-Pronounced "Yawk' by the way to those out of New England..) As in: Bangor (Bangah) Mainer (Maineah) Water (Watah)
  22. Where Down-east is that?
  23. Could be some old military-base thing.. ? No? On the periphery of old WW2 bases, you see experimental stuff from time to time...
  24. Yes... but did you see a negative impact 'as-is' because there was none? Overflow of lower gutter, damage, erosion, splash-back at grade, etc..
