Nolan Kienitz
Real wood or synthetic? Next question: How wide is the framing below?
davidmcg
All those screws countersunk that deep into the wood is more of an issue than the one you raised.
John Kogel
It looks like recycled plastic lumber. It's amateur workmanship. I might point it out, but I don't know if it will get worse. If all the planks are tight, I don't think I'd worry too much about it.

John Dirks Jr
There were some types of composite decking material that were recalled as defective. Google search can find more but here is one reference. http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit- ... ettlement-
Jim Baird
Looks like faux wood to me. I would certainly raise a flag to keep an eye out in case the ends start popping up. The main defect I have known with weekender carpentry is screws too short, but then you don't usually get to see that on an inspection. I did a sort of forensic check for a disgruntled deck customer whose carpenter had used a variety of screws, some short as 1 and 5/8 to fasten five-quarter pine. Needless to say, given heavy southern exposure and no sealer the deck was not holding up well.
Tom Raymond
The material is 'composite' decking. The issues in the pic are about as relevant as they would be if it were wood. John is right, there are lots of recalls and class actions. It would be a good idea to identify the decking for your client so he can determine if it is one of 'those' materials. I'd google it for them.
