Erby
A whole bunch of them all cracked up! Anybody remember the particular name of these? Jim Katen
I don't know the name. All of the fissures seem to be on the double-thick, laminated, areas. If that's the case, they're unlikely to have any effect on the performance of the shingles.
Erby
As you noted, the cracks are all on the double laminate section. Seen it before quite a few times several years ago, just can't remember the name.
Ben H
Horizon. Still lots of houses around here that have them, including my own.
Bill Kibbel
There's also another brand with the same issue. I can't remember the name. It's a 3-tab shingle with an "applique" - an additional layer of unreinforced asphalt and granules added in spots to create a decorative, dimensional enhancement. The manufacturers state the "map" cracks are cosmetic.
John Dirks Jr
Pabco is another one. http://www.ho25settlement.com/faq.php3
Robert Jones
I see quite a bit of the Pabco shingles, from the mid 90's, that have that issue.

Please elaborate. I take it to mean that the problem isn't limited to CertainTeed, but spans a range of manufacturers across different parts of the country. Rob Amaral
From horse's mouth (Certainteed rep here at plant in Norwood MA) "Cracking in the 'applique' (like that) is 'ok'.. (Versus 'cracking through the reinforcement' (the fiberglass-mat). "It's considered OK in the industry and by the manufacturer. An aesthetic anomaly"
