  1. Still at it with the crows? Enough already![:-monkeyd
  2. Actually, that sounds like an accurate description.
  3. I would avoid asphalt shingles regardless of slope. In terms of years of service per dollar spent, they're near the most costly alternative out there.
  4. Hmmm? Are you volunteering? [:-dev3]
  5. Tankless units are all about capacity. If he can find one that will meet his heat and domestic demands simultaneously it won't be economical. Rinnai makes a 180K BTU unit that will make 7.5 GPM for just under a grand. That's big enough, as long as he won't need to shower between Thanksgiving and Easter. Stick with the replacement tank that matches the specs of the original.
  6. Paint the cap stones 'safety orange'.
  7. Is the whole complex like this? No one caught this condition until the decks were built? That's an awful lot of imbeciles in one place. Back to the foam for a minute; Dirck's cite is about bugs, what about the smoke and flame spread index? I was under the impression it had to be covered.
  8. Funny, having read the drivel spewed by these two agencies I can say without hesitation that consumers need to be protected from them. Maybe licensing the field guys will raise the bar for the HOCs, but I won't be holding my breath.
  9. Or worse, awnings installed as casements.
  10. It's a double hung on it's side. Not only will it leak like a sieve, it'll open really fast if they didn't disable the balance springs. Hope you still have all your fingers.
  11. Truthfully, I'd be more concerned by the blue tint your camera imparts on your pictures.
  12. You need to watch more TV. They sell stuff that'd fix that lickety split, and you can choose between stuff on a roll or stuff in a spray can! On a more serious note, doesn't your pex tubing squeak with that strap arrangement? I used Wirsbo clips on mine and it makes a chirping noise as the tubing expands. Chirp. Chirp. Chirp.
  13. I once looked at a sunroom that had loose aluminum trim, the nails were all walking out. When I pulled the trim off, the double 2x10 header was fine over the door in the center but it was eaten almost completely away by the ends eight feet away on either side. Almost 20 feet of roof was precariously balanced on a 40" header in the center, and the ants were still active. I think it's worth a look.
  14. It's a radon mitigation fan, it's really only good for the electric utility. I bet the exhaust pipe was there before the fan, so no.
  15. Won't the water heater be exhausting close to the same amount of radon as the mitigation system? Or possibly more if the NG was fracked from shale?
  16. He must also have thought the 'nail' line was his exposure line. I'd call for a new cover. I don't want the call when much of it blows away.
  17. This is the guy with 900 SF on two floors in a fairly mild climate. Two window units and two Eden Pure heaters and he's comfy all year long for less than $600. Hell, I'd be real surprised if it cost him more than that a season to run it all. I bet the tech that butchered his ductwork cost him more than that. Sorry, but you got took.
  18. If your gonna play with fans I propose you put a box fan upstairs and blow the hot air down toward your return, or even out a window. Measure the air temp at the upstairs registers for each scenario and compare notes. If it changes any, then the booster fans might be a viable solution.
  19. Install a window unit ac from one of the big boxes. It'll cost less than $100 and you can do it yourself today. You won't get a tech in the door for less than that. I hope it works better in the fall when you switch over to heat....
  20. If we're gonna get a secret lair, can we get one closer to home? It'd be a bitch to get the sub through all the locks.
  21. That's the Big Box Mart effect. It costs money to make notches that would align the breakers when the dead front will do the same thing.
  22. I would think that the difference in feeder lengths would have to be several tens of feet for it to make a difference at the trip settings of those breakers. They're not that sensitive. It's ugly, but it isn't wrong.
  23. There is no way a bathroom exhaust fan (or any copious amounts of methane gas for that matter) is going to adversely affect the combustion air of a gas drier. I've tried.
  24. Thanks Bill, I'm adding caution tape to my tool bag today. I know a few agents that should be wrapped up with it.
